What is Pilates?
It was developed in the 1920's by the legendary physical trainer, Joseph H. Pilates (pronounced puh-LA-tees), The Pilates Method is a system of exercises focused on improving strength and flexibility for the whole body without building bulk. The Pilates Method includes over 500 exercises that focus on the muscles of the abdomen, back and buttocks, or "the powerhouse". The exercises are a series of precise movements performed on the mat and specifically designed apparatuses to create long, strong muscles and control over the mind and body.
How can I benefit from Pilates?
The main benefit of Pilates is a stronger, more balanced body. Students often experience increased energy and flexibility, as well as improved posture. When one has the strength to hold the spine correctly, the body moves with fluidity and efficiency. Many popular forms of exercise include pounding and jarring the body to a repetitive beat, sometimes causing stress and injury to the body. Pilates respects the body's limits and reconnects the mind and body to achieve greater physical comfort and awareness.
Who can do Pilates?
The Pilates Method promotes strength and physical harmony for people of all ages. When Pilates is taught one-on-one with a certified trainer each session is tailored to your specific needs. Everyone, from elite runners and dancers, to those who are sedentary or rehabilitating from injury can benefit from Pilates.
