Feed your heart

by Kate Kinne | Feb 24, 2023
February is Heart Month, and I was able to provide a Feed Your Heart presentation and cooking demo virtually this month at Galter LifeCenter.  In case you weren't able to attend, here is what you missed!

In addition to limiting the fat you consume from animal products like red meat, skin on poultry, fried foods, butter, cream and other whole fat dairy products, there are many foods that you SHOULD eat to promote a healthy heart.  Research shows that those who eat a largely plant-based diet including lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grain, beans, nuts and seeds have lower risk of developing chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes and certain types of cancers.  This is not to say that you should all be vegetarian, but that even if you choose to eat animal products (like lean protein and lowfat dairy), also including lots of plants can serve you well and help keep you healthy.

Plant based foods, offer plenty of:
  • Vitamins and minerals - critical for all body functions
  • Fiber -keeps your GI tract healthy, keeps you feeling full, helps lower LDL cholesterol, and helps maintain your blood sugar at a steadier state
  • Antioxidants - promote a healthy immune function by keeping your cells healthy
  • Anti-inflammatory properties - reduce the risk of chronic inflammation, which is known to cause disease
Enjoy these recipes for doses of really great nutrition in a delicious meal.  Both of these recipes are very customizable by swapping ingredients to meet your flavor preferences. In addition to the amazing benefits mentioned above, these recipes are also loaded with healthy plant-based fats which can help lower cholesterol, prevent inflammation and more.

Pantry Grain Bowl Recipe | Food Network - There are so many ways to do this one.  I love brown rice, scrambled egg, black beans, onion, bell peppers, avocado and salsa!

Really Green Smoothie Recipe | EatingWell - Add frozen strawberries for a little more sweetness.

Healthy Regards,
